Night Light for Kids

For this project, I wanted to make something special for my nephew's first birthday, so I decided on a night light shaped like the letter 'N', his initial. I started by sketching out the 'N' in SolidWorks, I included cutouts for batteries holder and a switch directly into the model. I printed it using black PLA on my Creality printer.

I had an old lamp lying around, not working anymore, but it had good parts like an LED strip, battery holder for two AA batteries, and a switch. I took those out, fixed them up a bit, and soldered everything to get it working again.

To enhance the light's effect, I designed and printed a white 'N' shaped piece to serve as a diffuser, softening the LED light for a gentle glow.

For the front, I got creative with some generative AI help to design animal shapes from the savannah, like lions and giraffes. I played around with these designs in Adobe Illustrator, then exported a DXF file for the laser cutter to cut them out of plywood.

Putting it all together was pretty straightforward. I used some neoprene glue to stick everything in place. The result? A night light that not only serves its purpose but also tells a story through its design, reflecting my nephew's love for wildlife and adventure.
